Enrolment information

Enrolments for Preference students starting at age 5 are welcome.
If you are interested in enrolling your child at St Joseph’s School, please come into the School Office and get an enrolment pack and make an appointment with the Principal.

St. Joseph’s School was established to serve the parish of Sacred Heart, Kaikoura.

Priority in Enrolment

All applications for enrolment will be processed in the following order of priority.

Preference Students
Preference Students will be given to preference applicants for whom the school is reasonably convenient. These are students who live within the Sacred Heart parish boundaries (see below) and have an affiliation with the Sacred Heart Parish as evidenced by the preference card signed by the parish priest according to the Bishops preference criteria.  Students within this priority group are guaranteed enrolment unless including all of them would exceed the school’s maximum roll.

In the situation where there are more preference applicants than places available the students will be prioritised in the following way.

First Priority
1.1 Preference New Entrants siblings of current students will have overall priority.
1.2 Preference siblings of current students in classes other than New Entrants.

Second Priority
Will be given to preference applicants who are siblings of current students and/or family/whanau members (see page 2) of former students.

Third Priority
Will be given to all other preference applicants not covered by the first priority.  At this priority level, preference in enrolment will be given to students in order of the following criteria:
• Enrolment is sought at new entrant level.
• Where there are available places within the students year level.
• Families have moved to the district (unless these students come into the first priority).

Fourth Priority
Will be given to non-preference students.  Non-preference students will be enrolled only if enrolment places remain after all preference applicants have been enrolled and the Board of Trustees judges that enrolment of the non-preference students will not compromise its ability to offer places to preference students who may apply at a later date.  The order of enrolment will be given to students in order of the following criteria:
• Enrolment is sought at new entrant level.
• The applicant has a sibling currently at the school.
• Where there are available places within the students year level (at the discretion of the Principal).

Applicants seeking first priority status may be required to provide proof of residence in the specified area.

Applicants seeking second priority status may be required to provide proof of a family/whanau relationship.

If the total number of applications from preference students is less than the number of places available, all preference applicants will be enrolled.

The number of places available for non-preference students will be governed by the maximum number allowable under the school’s Integration Agreement. This is 5% of our maximum roll.

If the total number of applicants is greater than the number of places available, unsuccessful applicants will have their names recorded on a waiting list, within their relevant priority category, ranked in the listed order and of the length of time pre-enrolment forms have been held at the school. Students on the waiting list may be offered places at a later date if places become available.
The waiting list will remain current until the board notifies the public that it is inviting applications for the next enrolment intake.

Pre-enrolment
Each year applications for enrolment will be sought by a date which will be published in the local newspaper, parish newsletter and school newsletter.
