Catholic Character

St. Joseph’s Catholic Character

St Joseph’s School is a Catholic school rooted in the rich tradition of our faith. We believe in nurturing the whole child – mind, body, and spirit – in a loving and supportive environment. Our school is guided by the values of the Gospel, where we strive to live out the teachings of Jesus Christ in our daily lives.

Our Foundational Charism: The Mission Sisters and Euphrasie Barbier

Our school was founded by the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, a religious order established by Euphrasie Barbier. Euphrasie, a woman of deep faith and courage, was inspired by a profound love for God and a desire to bring the Gospel to all people, especially those in need.

Euphrasie Barbier’s Vision:

  • Missionary Spirit: Euphrasie believed in reaching out to the world, sharing the love of Christ with all cultures and people. This spirit of mission continues to inspire us to be open to others and to serve our community.
  • Compassion and Service: She emphasized compassion, kindness, and service to those less fortunate. We strive to follow her example by showing empathy and care for everyone.
  • Education as Transformation: Euphrasie saw education as a powerful tool for transformation, empowering individuals to reach their full potential and contribute to a better world. We are committed to providing a quality Catholic education that fosters intellectual, spiritual, and personal growth.
  • Unity and Inclusivity: Euphrasie wanted all people to feel included, and feel as though they belonged. We try to provide a safe and inclusive enviroment for everyone.

Growing in Faith Together – Kia Tuputahi i te Whakapono

Our school is a community of faith where we journey together, supporting and encouraging one another on our spiritual path. We are committed to:

Partnership with Parish: We work closely with our local parish to strengthen the spiritual life of our school community. The Religious Education programme will educate and develop the whole child in a supportive Catholic environment.

Prayer and Liturgy: We participate in regular prayer services, liturgies, and sacramental celebrations, deepening our connection with God.

Religious Education: We provide a comprehensive religious education program that helps students understand and live their Catholic faith.

Values-Based Learning: We integrate Gospel values such as love, respect, justice, and forgiveness into all aspects of school life.

Community Outreach: We engage in service projects and outreach initiatives, putting our faith into action and making a positive difference in the world.

St Joseph’s School aims to provide opportunities for children to learn what it is to be Catholic – that is, what Catholics believe, and how they celebrate, live and pray. St Joseph’s School works alongside the parish and families to help the students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith as they grow in their faith.

The Catholic school is a place where the mana and tapu of each person is honoured and celebrated, where all are called to grow to realise their God-given talents, nurtured in faith and grow as disciples of Jesus.

All in the school community contribute to realise this through their commitment and gospel witness. To provide an encounter with Christ is our very reason for being.
